Several years ago, sometime around when smartphones became popular, cellular data providers started locking mobile phones. This means that if you have a contract with your mobile phone provider, you can only use the mobile phone if the SIM card which is on the phone is from that provider. If you have problems with your provider or they’re too expensive for you to continue with, then this can be troublesome and can stop you from using your iPhone. In this article, our focus is going to be how you can check if the iPhone is unlocked and some of the methods which help you to do so.
1. Check if the iPhone is Unlocked with Settings
This is the most basic method which is available, and by following the steps below, you are able to find out if your iPhone is unlocked or not through the Settings application on your mobile phone.
Step #1 – Take your iPhone and if necessary, enter your passcode. On the main screen, swipe until you find the “Settings” application. Tap on it to open it up.
Step #2 – Towards the top of the Settings list, tap on “Cellular”.
Note: if you are in the UK and have your language set to UK English, this settings option will be written as “Mobile Data” instead.
Step #3 – From here, look for an option titled “Cellular Data Network”. If you see this option, then it means that your iPhone is unlocked. If you cannot find this option, then your device is locked.
It’s worth noting that there are some providers who provide you with the ability to select your network and therefore, this method won’t always provide certainty as to whether or not your iPhone is unlocked.
Again, this is the most basic method that you can use although there is another method that is going to take a look at.
2. Check if iPhone is Unlocked with SIM Cards
With this next method, you will be checking if your iPhone is unlocked by switching the SIM card with one from another provider. You will be required to have another SIM card available as well as the small pin which is inside of the iPhone box that it came in.
#1 – Start by taking your iPhone, holding down the power button for a few seconds, and sliding the “Slider to Power Off” button.
#2 – Once your iPhone has turned off, find the SIM tray on the side of your iPhone and insert the pin into the small hole located on the tray.
Note: if you don’t have the pin from when you bought your iPhone, any small pin-like object will do.
#3 – After you press the pin into the tray hole, the tray will slide out, and you will be able to remove your SIM card. SIM cards are small and delicate so be careful when removing it and make sure that you don’t misplace it.
#4 – Once you’ve removed your SIM card, insert another SIM card which is from a different provider.
#5 – Hold the power button to turn on your iPhone again and allow a moment for it to load up fully.
#6 – After your iPhone has loaded, enter your passcode to unlock the screen.
#7 – If you receive a notification titled something along the lines of “SIM Unlock Code”, then your iPhone is locked to your carrier.
Using these steps may take slightly longer although it will help you to determine whether or not your iPhone is unlocked effectively.
3. Check if iPhone is Unlocked with Online Service
The final option which you can use to check if iPhone is unlocked is with the Dr.Fone online service. If you’re not in a rush, then this is the optimal approach to take as this method can take some time to read through and try out for yourself.
#1 – First head over to the Dr.Fone iPhone Unlock Status checker, which you can access on this web page.
#2 – From here, enter your email address as well as your iPhone’s IMEI number.
Note: the chances are that you don’t know what your iPhone’s IMEI number is. To find it out, enter *#06# into your iPhone’s keypad, and within just a few seconds, it will be shown to you. You can also find your iPhone’s IMEI number in the “About” sections of the “Settings” app.
#3 – After filling out the details, check the Terms & Conditions box at the bottom, click on “Add to Card”.
#4 – You will be emailed an activation email which you must use to activate your account. If you don’t receive the email within a few minutes, check your email account’s “Spam” folder.
#5 – After clicking on the link from the email, you will be taken to a page where you must enter your mobile phone number and IMEI number again. Do so, click on the “I’m not a robot” box, and follow the steps which are shown.
#6 – Next to the box where you entered your iPhone’s IMEI number, click on the “Check” button, followed by clicking on “Simlock and Warranty”, and lastly click on the “Check Apple Phone Details”.
#7 – You will then be taken to a page that will either say “Unlocked: false” or “Unlocked: true”.
As we previously mentioned, this method is a little longer than the other methods although if you aren’t in a rush, then this is the method to use. With it, you can check if the iPhone is unlocked efficiently without going through the hassle of the other methods.
Which Method You Should Use
