What Are Echo Fighters & What Do They Do In Super Smash Bros?
In simplest terms, Echo Fighters are the specific type of fighters found in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In fact, Echo Fighters is the term used to identify the “Clones” that were existing in previous versions. Well, that means, there are some similarities and substantial differences between clones and Echo Fighters. The main difference between them is that Echo Fighters are an official term that is solely declared by Nintendo. Basically, the Echo Fighters aren’t recognized either as skin or pallet swap. In addition to that, the way they play is slightly different.
How many characters in total?
In fact, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate comprises of 74 characters in total as of this writing. Out of those 74 characters, there are seven official Echo Fighters. In addition to that, the Piranha Plant will be introduced to the game somewhere around this February. Five additional DLC characters will be introduced to the game pretty soon. Well, that means there will be a total of 82 characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
What are the names of those Echo Fighters?
As mentioned before, there are seven Fighters in the game. Echo characters come with the same number the fighters of their clones. However, the numbers associated with each of these characters are accompanied by a “ε” symbol. Listed below are the Fighters that are found in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
- Dark Samus 4ε (echo fighter of Samus)
- Daisy 13ε (echo fighter of Peach)
- Lucina 21ε (echo fighter of Marth)
- Chrom 25ε (echo fighter of Roy)
- Dark Pit 28ε (echo fighter of Pit)
- Ken 60ε (echo fighter of Ryu)
- Richter Belmont 66ε (echo fighter of Simon Belmont)
Does that mean that there is no echo fighter for Mario?
Some individuals wrongfully assume that Dr. Mario is the echo fighter of Mario in this game. The truth is that there is no echo fighter for Mario. As we already know, the Echo Fighters are more of clones of their fighters. Well, if you observe the movement patterns, you’ll understand that Dr. Mario is completely different from Mario. So, you cannot take Dr. Mario as a clone of Mario.
When it comes to Echo Fighters, they feature the same movements of the original fighters. However, the movements are not 100% identical. There are slight differences associated with their movements compared to the originals. Well, if a character moves in a 100% unique way, that means that it is a unique character. Not a clone of any other character. For instance, characters like Dr. Mario has a completely new set of movements. In a nutshell, you cannot call a character an echo fighter if it has a unique set of movements. And, that would be one of the most effective ways to differentiate Echo Fighters from others.
Apart from Dr. Mario, there are few other fighters that are not Echo Fighters. For instance, Toon Link and Young Link should not be recognized as Echo Fighters. Also, Pichu doesn’t have any characteristics to be called as the Echo Fighter of Pikachu. We also should mention that Ganondorf has some of the movements that are similar to Captain Falcon. But Ganondorf is not the echo fighter of Captain Falcon.
If you refer to the website of Super Smash Bros, you can see that come with a number. This number is similar to the original character mirrored. However, the epsilon symbol placed with the number explains that they are Echo Fighters.
As mentioned earlier in this article, you should know that these Fighters replicate original characters’ moves. Nevertheless, you should remember that these characters feature different types of idle animations, Final Smashes, and taunts.
Have you seen any character that has moves that aren’t featured by any of the other characters? Of course, there are plenty of them. None of those characters are called Echo Fighters because they are unique. They are rather called unique fighters.
When you take a look at the characters like Marth and Lucina, they feature the same movements and attacks. Nevertheless, the significant difference between these characters is the way they attack.
When it comes to the attacks featured by Marth, they are exceptionally strong when done with the sword’s tip. Also, you can expect the same amount of damage from Lucina’s blade. That is regardless of the way the opponent is being hit. Lucina is likely to be shorter compared to Marth which should be considered when hitting less range.
That said, despite the differences, there are some similarities among the players. For instance, Lucina prefers keeping the opponent within just her reach (not too close) just like Marth.
Also, it can be handy to remember that Roy has several attacks that are similar to Marth and Lucina. However, Roy has various other attacks that are obviously unique to himself. As a result, both Roy and Marth fall into different character slots.
When it comes to a version like Super Smash Bros. Melee, you may think Mario and Dr. Mario as clones. They feature exactly similar attacks and animations. Nevertheless, they utilize different types of properties. Therefore, you cannot still call them Echo Fighters. You already know that Echo Fighters are the mirrors of some fighters.
Mario and Dr. Mario are different from each other from another aspect as well. Dr. Mario comes with a spin, but Mario has F.L.U.D.D. as his special. In addition to that, we should mention that Dr. Mario comes with a specially introduced aerial attack. This attack is found in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate version.
When it comes to Pichu and Ganondorf, you should never consider them as Echo Fighters. That rule is applicable for Super Smash Bros. Melee as well. They actually had some special attacks that aren’t featured by the originals.
Captain Falcon has a remarkable “Knee of Justice” (which is a forward aerial). However, Ganondorf instead used his fist to attack using an overhead swing. You should also remember that Pichu and Pikachu feature some smash attacks which are totally different.
Although there were some speculations about including Dixie Kong in the list of characters, it did not happen. The speculations further said that Dixie Kong would be Diddy Kong’s boyfriend.
If you assume that the speculations are correct and Dixie Kong is an Echo Fighter, there are some mismatches. That means, she is supposed to use her hair only for idle animations and taunts. But she is not. Well, if truth to be told, she is not even Dixie Kong anymore. For her up special, she would have given a prop like rocket barrel. But, instead, she uses her iconic helicopter spin. Well, this is really awkward, isn’t it?
If Dixie Kong happened to be in the roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, she should have unique moves. Although there can be imitations of several moves of Diddy, she might possess at least a couple of attacks. Because of that very reason, she might not have been considered as an Echo Fighter. But, despite all those speculations, Dixie Kong is not there.
Reasons to play as Echo Fighters
Now, let’s take a look at the reasons why you should play as Echo Fighters. If truth to be told, playing as Echo Fighters is a matter of preference. In fact, all the characters in this game come with good playability. However, you should know the basics. Some characters move slow, but they can hit really hard. In this case, you might switch for an Echo Fighter and make it move faster. For instance, you can take Richter (the Echo fighter of Simon) if you need to move faster.
When you have Echo Fighters, you have more and better options. Such option becomes really helpful when it comes to Smash games. Or else, if you don’t like the regular fighter, you can try the fighter. After all, having Echo Fighters makes it feel so good for any player.
